Notes of 10 April

Dear Friends,
I have now completed, and updated on the website, The accounts of the species in Ornithion and Phaeomyias. For an extended discussion of why Phaeomyias tumbezana should be recognized as distinct from Phaeomyias murina, go to P.tumbezana and click on Citations, Notes and Synonyms.
I also forgot to mention that I have completed all the Puffbirds, Bucconidae.
Enjoy

Dear Friends,
I have temporarily ceased entering my data on the Galbulidae to deal with several other matters. My friend,Marek Kuziemko, of Poland, pointed out to me that I had missed entering the citations and synonyms for Glaucidium brodiei and Bubo virginianus. I've fixed both; and fixing the Great Horned Owl entry turned out to be a great adventure. If you want to see the comprehensive results, put Bubo virginianus in the search term and be sure to hit the Citations, Synonyms etc line. There is a massive wealth of data and explanation there. I had begun a revision of the Certhia species. I'll return to these. I have also been working on a paper that will show that the account by Short and Horne in HBW,vol.7 in relation to Pteroglossus torquatus,Pteroglossus sanguineus and Pteroglossus erythropygius is unmitigated bullshit.
Enjoy! and tell your friends.

Dear Friends,
I completed all of the data for the Puffbirds, Bucconidae,Jacamars,Galbulidae, and started on the Toucans. So far I have entered all the data for Jacamars. I was interrupted by the need to reassign the genera of Terns, which has also been completed. This took a hell of the long time, because of my practice of adding keys to every synonym. eg. Take Sterna bergii, now Thalasseus bergii. I had to go through one by one and change all of the keys from (= S.b.bergii) to (=T.b.bergii). I hoped that I could get my web programmer to add a mini-program to make global changes. Unfortunately, he seems to have discovered commercial success as the programmer for Australian Idol, as is no longer interested in messing around with bird databases.
Enjoy, but please remember the amount of work involed in updating things under the new regime.

Peters Family List
|
 |
Based on J. L. Peters et al., Checklist of the Birds of the World, Harvard University Press/Museum of Comparative Zoology, 1931-1986. This list departs slightly from the strict Peters list. Peter's Checklist was written over a fifty-year period, during which thinking about the classification of birds changed. A further problem is that the chronological order of the volumes did not correspond to the taxonomic order. An example of the problems that this created can be seen from the Introduction to Volume XI, edited by E. Mayr and G. W. Cottrell, the last volume to appear, in 1986. They state: 'The designation Muscicapidae was used in Checklist, Volumes X (1964) and XII (1967), in the broad sense of Hartert. It included thrushes, babblers, whistlers and numerous aberrant groups. None of these is any longer included in the Muscicapidae as now delimited on the basis of the researches of Charles G. Sibley and others.' If one follows strictly the sequence in the Peters volumes, one is left with Muscicapidae appearing in several different places in the list. There are two ways to remedy this. One, used by Howard and Moore(1980), is to treat everything from thrushes to whistlers as subfamilies of Muscicapidae. This, however, flies in the face of the reconition in the later volumes of the separateness of the Australian groups, which are recognized as families (Maluridae, Acanthizidae, Monarchidae, and Eopsaltridae). Accordingly we have preferred to treat the subfamilies in Volume X (Turdinae, Orthonychinae, Timaliinae, Panurinae, Picathartinae and Polioptilinae) as families. Similarly, we have preferred to treat the subfamilies under Emberizidae in Volume XIII as families, and have elevated Catamblyrhynchidae, Cardenalidae, Thraupidae, and Tersinidae to family status. The list which is the starting point for this project lists basic information about all species, including the regular distribution by country. I am going through this list expanding the distribution and also adding to the Latin synonymy. The notation (Complete) adjacent to a family or subfamily below indicates I have updated both the distribution and the synonymy.

Introduction
|
 |
I have been working for some time on what I hope will be the most comprehensive
database about the birds of the world, both extant, and extinct since 1600.
THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND FULL INFORMATION IS NOT YET AVAILABLE
FOR ALL SPECIES!
The extent of work completed (to the extent that anything in
such an ongoing project can be called completed!) is indicated in the Peters
Family List.
I will be updating the information in this database monthly.
I welcome any comments and particularly corrections or more precise information.
