Marine. During breeding usually occurs in off-shore waters. Non-breeding distribution largely pelagic. Breeds on thick forest high on limestone cliffs.

At close of breeding season,birds migrate east of New Zealand into Central Pacific, some reaching south America. Young birds may spend up to 10 years in the zone of Humboldt Current. Small numbers cross Tasman Sea to eastern Australia; perhaps mainly young birds.
