Habitat marine in subantarctic and subtropical waters waters reaching tropics in coll Humboldt Current off western South America;breeds on Australian and New Zealand islands on either side of Subtropical Convergence
Breeding "Most eggs are laid in Sep,hatch in Dec and chicks fledge in April."
Some populations migratory to waters off South Africa or South America; others remain at or near colonies all year. Nominate cauta circumpolar; common in Australasian waters;across Soutyh Pacific, small numbers reach west coast of South America; scarce in South Atlantic;common off southern Africa; range across south Indian Ocean. Subspecies salvini occurs in South Pacific , ranging east to west coast of South America, where birds extend north to 5°S;scarce in southern Indian Ocean,though small numbers occur regularly in seas around Iles Crozet, where they breed; rare vagrant to South Atlantic. Subspecies eremita found mainly in seas round Chatham Islands but ranges to east and south coasts of New Zealand & central South Pacific;rare vagrant o east Australian Waters. At Auckland Island, young fledge August; apparently most young leave Snares,Bounty and Chatham islands April; young of Tasmanian population fledge late March to April. Non-breeding adults at Tasmanian colonies all year. At Snares Island, birds return September; at Bounty Island 7-10 days later.
