Habitat  Marine,ranging from coastal to pelagic waters.Occurs south into regions of pack ice and north into subtropical zone.Breeds on open costal plateaux,also headlands,often in exposed position.Feeds along coast most of year.

Movement
Adults probably move little,dispersing only to adjacent waters and generally keeping further south than M.halli.Juveniles may follow prevailing winds east around Southern Ocean.Immatures move further north than adults,typically reaching tropics and following cold water currents off South America and West Africa.Only definite record from Northern Hemisphere 1 bird off Ushant,France in November 1967.Giant Petrel at Midway Atoll, 1959,1961 and 1962.
