Marine & pelagic,in Antarctic waters.Nests on ice floes near coast,or on coast itself,but sometimes as much as 200km from open sea. Prefers areas of frozen sea with some elevation,to provide shelter from wind. Feeds offshore.
"Birds attend colonies Mar to Dec.However,cycle begins 1 month later at southernmost colonies than in northernmost.Arrival at northernmost colonies from beginning Mar to end Apr."(HANZAB,1,p.143)
Probably dispersive,but little known.Few birds seen north of 60°s . Pre-moult period at sea 30 days. Vagrant to New Zealand,southern parts of South America and several islands of subantarctic. Records furthest north relate to several records of immatures off central Argentina.
