Temperate marine waters.Typically nests on sandy or rocky islands,often at base of cliffs or in sand dunes.Nests can be over 300m from coast on land more than 50m above sea level.Inshore feeder.

Sedentary. Adults in particular stray little from breeding colonies,and after moulting may return to breeding colony sporadically.Pre-moult period at sea ca.40 days. ON leaving colony,juveniles perform dispersive movements,with ringing recoveries up to 1000km from colony. Some juveniles return to moult at natal colony,and subsequently to breed. Vagrant to Snares Is.
